Mendelssohn : Violin Concerto - Ibragimova

This is by special request of PdA, who kindly gave me the precise details of the concert.

And now, by golly, I'm going to have to start posting performances by someone else or this blog will turn into Ibragimova's unofficial fan site.

  1. Thank you!
the info was actually meant as a small token of appreciation for having posted the Shostakovich concerto. I reckoned and hoped that dutch radio would put up the mp3 from the original PCM recording as they eventually did.
That same Shostakovich post made me look around for the BBC 3 stream at 320 kbps, and I found out that it is also available outside the UK. So, just to break the Ibragimova routine, here you have something from a different performer.
It will be up for only 30 days, so if you like it, feel free to recycle it in one of your post.

Sound quality is good though with a tad too much emphasis of the high frequencies (BBC equalization) for my liking. Besides splicing (I kept only the music) and fading in and out, I applied an amplification of 2 dB.

Further information in the zip file.

  2. I also recorded the Beethoven concert – some of my favourite sonatas, played with a lot of conviction!

And I too routinely have to normalise the BBC signal. Their announcers tend to be broadcast at a higher level than the actual music, and when you remove the announcements you can certainly add a couple of dB to the sound.

Anyhow - next up is the Belcea's Beethoven cycle! I don't know if you've caught any of it, but these people are on the top of their game.

  4. I was afraid you would not have missed that ardent lady. The Belcea I would have liked to record but, both myself not having yet figured out a way to schedule the VLC player to do it without manual help and my wife wishing to go for a walk in the mountains, I skipped it.

In any case, it would be nice to get a chance of hearing it in full sound glory. Oops, while writing this, I noticed you posted bits from two concerts, I think. Thanks!

As to world renowned quartets, BBC is going to rebroadcast part of the Kurtag concerts from this year Schwetzingen Festival at the end of this month (oddly enough stripping from the programme the music of Kurtag himself, just to fit in the 1h schedule window, I guess). I think on the 30th of December it is the turn of the Hagen Quartett with Beethoven's op 130 + 133. A nice reminder of the ungrateful task even a world famous group has to face to tackle the intonation pitfalls of Beethoven's late quartets (I listened to the live broadcast and have the original SWR2 128 kbps recording).
